People or Planes celebrates 40 years

Forty years ago, that the federal government expropriated 30 sq. miles of Class 1 farmland for an airport that was never built!

Land Over Landings invites you to a 40th anniversary celebration, on Friday, March 2, starting at 10 a.m., at the main intersection of the hamlet of Brougham, Hwy. Seven & Brock Road. (For those of you in Toronto: Brougham is in North Pickering, at the easternmost end of Hwy 407; turn left at Brock Road and you're there).

Things will start with the church bells ringing, just as the bells at Melody Farm, a little north of Brougham, summoned everyone to the first meeting of People or Planes on the day the airport was announced, March 2, 1972.

There will be street theatre -- a salute to the parades and processions of the Seventies -- and lots more, but with a 2012 slant. We will show that all kinds of people, from all walks of life, remain opposed to an airport here and want this top-grade farmland saved for food production and the preservation of natural heritage. Please join us, help swell our ranks, and get the message across loud and clear that we are not a fringe group or a dreaded "special interest group"; we are the people -- as in People or Planes. We have a vision of what the Lands could be: not a polluting airport but a thriving farming community, protected from urban development, offering a secure food source for the GTA.

In Brougham Hall, there will be a press conference with representatives from People or Planes, including Bill Lishman (flier with Canada Geese, and POP stalwart), Dr. Charles Godfrey (original POP chairman), and Anne Howes (one of the three women who participated in the "Last Stand" occupation in 1975 that got nation-wide media attention and helped stop the demolitions). The Hall will be filled with historical material covering this 40-year-old "No airport / Save the lands" battle. And there will be plenty of new material as well. And plenty of very passionate people to hear from and to talk to, including the author of Dying For An Airport.
On Saturday, March 3, from 11-3, there will be an Open House at Brougham Hall, partly to welcome those who couldn't attend on the Friday. All the displays will still be there for visitors to see. There will be refreshments, too, both days.

If you can manage the Friday morning, even for an hour or so, please join us and make this a media event that no level of government will be able to ignore. Bring a sign or wear a costume demonstrating your commitment to these lands. Please pass on this invitation to everyone you can think of, especially to friends in the GTA.

March 2nd. Mark your calendars!  Forty years from now -- or any time at all -- you'll want to be able to say, 'I was there!'
