The charm of the original airport terminal
I had a direct view of the original airport terminal for the first 15 or more years I lived on the waterfront. Many things were and are wrong with the airport, but the small, white-frame terminal building always made me smile, with its control tower on top that looked like a widow's walk.
In winter, lit-up and welcoming, it stood in a great expanse of snow, with a circular driveway in front, and at Christmas-time, the small evergreen in front was covered in lights.
When the trees grew up in front of me, I missed seeing the terminal and often walked down to the dock wall to look at it. I've been in it several times, and each time I've been struck by how basic, people-sized, and domestic the early flight infrastructure was. The original terminal reflects the period when flight was an adventure, not a security nightmare.
I thought the building was protected. It would be a real loss if it were moved or razed.
