Spend $50 million on high-speed rail instead

Another $50-60 million for this useless airport? Meanwhile, certain members of the current federal government plump for high-speed rail passenger service to many of the same points served by the airlines that lap up the hidden subsidies provided by taxpayer-funded facilities and services such as this airport.

That same money could buy VIA about 20 coaches under a tack-on order for the equipment now being built for Amtrak. Couple that with the frequency and speed improvements that will soon result from the federal government's investment of more than $300 million in the Toronto-Ottawa-Montreal rail infrastructure and we'd have the foundation for a true rail passenger revolution.

But why would politicians do anything as sensible as that?
