Self-centredness of short-haul flying
Response to an article in Feb. Issue of Toronto Life sent to the editor.

Your latest This City talks about how wonderful Porter Airlines is.
It may be. I will not argue that. But what I will argue is that the self-centeredness of those who take any short-haul aircraft in this day and age - when the environmental consequences are so great is mind-blowing.
Do you think that your readers do not care about the environment? Do you think that ruining the main summer holiday spot (ie the Toronto Islands) for hundreds of thousands of people who do not have cottages is something to brag about? The arrogance of the privileged in this City as promoted in this article, is overwhelming.
And the put-down of those who are trying for a better Toronto--for its air, for its water--and for all of its citizens is appalling.
With attitudes such as that shown in the article, our planet does not stand a chance. Will you next promote the use of plastic bags and add to the garbage dumps currently bigger than the State of Texas floating in the Pacific? Will you then promote the use cars instead of mass transit?
Are you even bothering to learn the issues? Do you care if the planet dies?
It does not appear so. As the author says as she leads us “with lust and glee” to self-destruction: "We'll clink a complimentary cocktail to that"
