CAIR & Joe agree on airport noise

Joe:

Thank you for your posting, "TPA handling of noise study unacceptable."  You have been a strong supporter of the Island Airport, but obviously you are beginning to understand why a busy airport is not compatible with the growing community that surrounds it.

For many years members of CommunityAIR have been deeply frustrated about the way that the Toronto Port Authority manages the Island Airport and their lack of consultation with the community.  When the TPA does bring issues to the community the consultations are so restricted and controlled, and the information that they provide is so biased and pro-airport, that they just add to our frustrations.  It is no wonder members of CommunityAIR often react with anger to almost anything that they say.

The problems coming from the expansion of the airport are multiplying.  Noise, air pollution and traffic are the chief complaints and all of these problems are worsening as Porter, and now other airlines, increase the number of flights.  These problems are not going to go away as long as the Island Airport is operating, but your suggestion of moving the maintenance of aircraft to Pearson is a good one.  The high pitched shriek from the engine run-ups, as the mechanics do their maintenance work, can be unbearable.  It can come at any time of the day or night, and it is shattering to the nerves.

CommunityAIR members have proposed moving the Porter maintenance operations to Pearson several times but, in the normal fashion of the way that Toronto Port Authority treats input from the community, the proposal is either ignored or treated with indifference.  Perhaps if you, a supporter of the airport, can make this proposal it might make a difference.

Thanks again,
Bill Freeman
