Expect a plane a minute!
I have been crunching some numbers on
the take-offs
and landings at the Island Airport and my conclusions are not
comforting.
The airport is open from 6:45 am to
11:00 pm every
day. If you do the calculation, that amounts to a total of 975 minutes
of
airport operations every day.
The Toronto Port Authority has
announced that they
will increase the number of slots (take-offs and landings) at the
airport to 212
a day.
If you divide 212 into 975 you get
4.6. That
means that during operating hours on average there will be a take-off
or
landing at the Island Airport every 4.6 minutes.
But hold on! We know that the Island
Airport,
like every other commercial airport in the country, is much busier in
the
mornings and the evenings because that is when people want to fly.
So, expect a take-off or landing at the
Island
Airport during the peak periods every minute or possibly every two
minutes, just
when people are going to or from work or school.
David Miller promised "No Island
Airport Expansion"
in 2003. The airport has undergone massive expansion since then and
is on the brink of making another huge expansion.
Mayor Miller, why have you not used the
provisions
of the Tripartite Agreement to protect the people of
Toronto?
