Tunnel visions
It might be prudent for the City of Toronto to back a tunnel project
from the Leslie water pumping station(in front of the Rogers centre) to
Hanlans point on Toronto islands.
This multi-purpose underwater link would allow year-round controlled pedestrian and bicycling access to the island, and support the replacement of old fresh water pipes with new pipes feeding Toronto islands, which is already budgeted by Toronto Public Works.
This tunnel could also branch out to the Toronto Island airport. The tunnel would be large enough to support emergency and park service vehicles.
The city could eventually retire most of the old large polluting ferries, and replace them with smaller boats, which would run more frequently, supplied by the private sector.
The mainland link could be extended into the Path system at the Toronto convention centre, allowing for a link to the subway system.
A second tunnel could be build from the east side of Wards Island to the port lands under the old hydro craft ferry terminal. This is where the new Ripley's aquarium should be built. This link could be made of acrylic, showcasing Toronto's pristine freshwater access to Lake Ontario. This second link would not only serve Toronto islanders at the eastern side, but complete a full circumference access pathway to the islands, which would also support volunteer runs( Like The Heart and Stroke run) via The Queens Quay.
The new Portlands inhabitants as well as downtown condo dwellers need a place to get daily exercise.
Time to think about how to give the public unfettered year-round access to the Toronto Islands, one of our greatest natural assets.
Time to think about sustainability, wellness and how to lower our health care costs with daily exercise.(Would Queens Park pony up some millions? The Feds surely would.)
Time to measure twice and cut once.
