An exchange about TPA's request for community feedback

An exchange of letters between the TPA's Geoff Wilson and Rebecca Quigley, in response to Quigley's completed feedback form from the TPA's recent public meeting:

Ms. Quigley,

I am appreciative of  your feedback. Clearly the meeting did not meet your needs or expectations. I have sent Mr. Iler some more factual information by letter today , which may be of some help in answering some of your questions, and it is or will soon be posted on our website as well. I can assure you the meeting format was not intended to be disrespectful, but recommended by the consultant as an effective way to discuss this information in large groups. I am sure we can work better together , given the positive next steps outlined in final for the Liaison Committee initiative. Meanwhile we continue our work to implement the study's findings and look for further improvements on our side. Thank you for contacting me.

Sincerely,

Geoffrey A. Wilson
President & Chief Executive Officer
Toronto Port Authority

Mr. Wilson,

I appreciate you taking time to respond to my email, however I was insulted by your response. As I recall from the meeting this feedback was supposed to matter to the board of the Toronto Port Authority. I heard from you and other board members that you really cared what we had to say. At that meeting you asked for my input into the Noise Study. So I spent some time reviewing the Noise Study and responding to your request with questions and opinions. Your response is to tell me that you have sent the information which will help me to Mr. Iler. This seems like a very indirect way to communicate with me.

However, Mr. Iler was kind enough to let me review that letter and I found that it was not a help to me. It did not respond to my questions and suggestions. Instead it seems to be an attempt to slur the reputation of the people of my community and of Mr. Iler and CommunityAir. I will leave it up to Mr. Iler to respond to a letter that was written to him and not to me.

I do wish to express my concern at your statement in this email that: "Meanwhile we continue our work to implement the study's findings." This suggests that the study which was supposed to be a draft, and was supposed to allow for community input, has been adopted by the TPA without any consultation process. It reinforces my original opinion that responding to your survey was a huge waste of my time.

Why did you ask for our feedback if it was to make no difference to you?

Sincerely,

Rebecca Quigley
