A NON-downtowner weighs in on the airport and the TPA
A recent letter to the Toronto Star's Bob Hepburn debunks some myths about who elected David Miller, and why
Dear Mr. Hepburn:
With sadness I note that you are perpetuating the myth that David Miller was elected by downtown residents. I am a senior who has never lived below St. Clair at any time, and am also a strong advocate for preserving the Toronto Islands as a green oasis and precious heritage. The voters who supported Mayor Miller were, in large part, happy supporters of the incumbent, Barbara Hall, right up until she cast the deciding vote on the Island bridge issue. At some meetings where I was present and she announced that, the buzz after she departed, left no doubt that she had lost votes. Citizens from North Toronto, Lawrence Park, and Rosedale were at those meetings.... no waterfront dwellers. It is my conviction that further expansion of the Island Airport should appear on the next municipal ballot along with a forensic examination of the TPA's deals and actions over the past 10 years. The prospect of extreme expansion of any airport 400 yards from the waterfront, with the explosive development that has taken place and is ongoing (over 70 highrise condos with a six-square-block area already) chills me. I know that fighting Porter is a lost cause, but simply had to remind you that downtown residents were far from alone in electing Mayor Miller.
Thank you for reading this.
