Letter from Toronto Island Community Associatiom

to:  Mayor David Miller and Councillor Pam Mc Connell

RE: Mega settlement between the City of Toronto and the Toronto Port Authority

We have received news of the proposed settlement of various issues between the City of Toronto and the Toronto Port Authority. While we congratulate you on the settlement of some issues we must express our extreme disappointment that so many issues have been left off the table. If an agreement is going to be reached with the Port Authority, then the many issues that affect the various communities along the waterfront MUST be included in the agreement.

Each community has individual issues that should be addressed. To speak to the issues that affect our community, we can briefly state that noise, and pollution are primary concerns. They are concerns not just for us in the residential community on the Island but for all the other users of the Island Park: the public, the yacht clubs and the Marina, the Gibralter Point Centre for the Arts, and particularly and most ironically the Island Public/Natural Science School.

We are also aware of the neglect of the port infrastructure here – the appalling condition of the seawall at the Eastern Gap.

Over-riding all of these concerns is the lack of transparency and consultation with the affected communities by the Port Authority.

These are issues that must be included in any settlement of the outstanding issues between the City and the Port Authority.

We would be pleased to contribute to any discussion of settlement of these outstanding issues.

Sincerely

Ellen Vera Allen

Chair, Toronto Island Community Association
