If They Don’t Know the Limits, Why Invite More Flights?
In a Globe Report on Business story on Saturday, the following appeared:
"The [Toronto] Port Authority, a federal agency, said it has yet to determine "the number, and specific mix, of daily commercial flights that can be accommodated at the TCCA."
Yet they are announcing that they’re open to "receiving expressions of interest from" operators of scheduled commercial services beyond Porter.
"For years, CommunityAIR has been seeking release by the TPA and Transport Canada of the Noise Exposure Forecast study that establishes those limits, and has always been rebuffed" said Brian Iler, chair of CommunityAIR. "Now, we know why –they don’t have one."
"It is shocking, and fundamentally irresponsible that the TPA has allowed Porter to commence and dramatically expand its operations without knowledge of the limits of that expansion. It is even more outrageous that they should be entertaining adding additional carriers. "
A study, requested by the City of Toronto last December, has yet to commence. Transport Canada, which has the duty to carry out such a study forthwith upon request from the City, has dithered disgracefully.
"Surely, any further expansion of commercial passenger traffic through the Island Airport should await the results of that study." said Iler.
