Safety is a real issue!
Wow! Haven't we stirred up a hornet's nest, now. Obviously people are more than a little sensitive about the issue of safety at the Island Airport.
We deny all of the accusations that we are sitting around waiting for an accident to happen at the Island Airport. The idea that people could get hurt or even killed is abhorrent to us. But there are serious problems here.
Yes, we agree that accidents can and do happen at all airports, even ones with long runways. But the point we are making is simple. The Island Airport is in the middle of a city, in the near vicinity of tall buildings and several other obstacles that present hazards to aircraft. The number of pilot cautions that are listed is enough to frighten even the most seasoned flier. The runways are very short and if the runways are overshot the plane ends in the water, not a happy prospect.
We should be building and using safe airports not ones with serious safety hazards, and you don't have to be an airline expert to understand that simple point.
Joe, you are a air traffic controller. Do you actually mean to tell us that you do not recognize that the Island Airport has serious safety hazards? Stop being an apologist, look at the facts and face the truth about the problems about the safety problems of the Island Airport.
