The tunnel is the "Trojan Horse"

Joe - the answer is in our August 28 press release - this IS the size of a vehicular tunnel - all that's missing are the approach ramps. Here is the text from that release:

The proposed Island Airport tunnel is another example: the TPA has stated it will have interior dimensions of 8 meters wide by 4 metres high (27 feet wide by 13 feet high).

These dimensions are not pedestrian tunnel dimensions – this is a vehicle tunnel – disguised as a pedestrian tunnel,: said Brian Iler, Chair of CommunityAIR. “A true Trojan horse”.

Community AIR has measured several high volume pedestrian tunnels in the TTC:

*The tunnel between the two parts of the Spadina subway station that used to have two “moving sidewalks” is 5.2 meters wide by 2.4 meters high (17 feet wide X 8 feet high)

*The main feeder tunnel at Wilson Station that leads from the subway platform to the two levels of bus stops is 7.0 meters wide by 2.7 meters high (23 feet wide by 9 feet high) - big enough to accommodate within minutes passenger from a full subway train of 1200 passengers catching buses to York U.

"The dimensions of the proposed tunnel appear designed to accommodate two lanes of vehicles. And that’s prohibited by the tripartite agreement among the City, The TPA, and the federal government that constrains the Island Airport. But it certainly wouldn’t surprise us if that pedestrian tunnel is designed to be converted into a full blown vehicle tunnel. What else would explain those dimensions?“ said Iler.

Jane Jacobs was right – Island Airport Tunnel IS a Trojan Horse

During the Island airport bridge fight, world-renowned urbanologist Jane Jacobs weighed in with “I urge Torontonians to close this dangerous Trojan horse down.".  She was referring to the fact that opening up the airport for limited commercial air travel would inexorably lead to expansion that would overwhelm everything else on the waterfront.

This is happening as we speak.
