Joe frustrations and why he participates in the CAIR blog

Hello Joanna,

We obviously have not had the best blog relationship so I hope we can move forward in a constructive manner.
I suspect if we spoke face to face, the exchange would be much more respectful and cordial - the internet can be a detriment in this respect.

Upon reflection, it's not like we don't agree on some things. For example, I have spoken out on several occasions against the Monopoly Porter enjoys at the TCCA.

Although I have commented that 1-3 minute violations should not be an issue, I agree with the principal that curfew violations are wrong (but normal)and fines should be levied.

I agree that engine maintenance runs should be regulated more strictly and limited to very specific time periods.

I believe the TPA has done a poor job of communicating with the community and needs to seek a better relationship with area citizens based on open and honest dialogue as well as mutual trust.

I believe Porter should be held to a daily flight limit that will prevent the airport from overwhelming the waterfront with traffic. They are currently restricted to around 120+/- flights per day and are very close to that limit. Once the new (NEF) Noise contours are released, a new flight limit (slots) will be revealed.

I agree that the TPA should be turned over to the city but the TCCA operation should be entrusted to the GTAA (Greater Toronto Airports Authority) and NOT the city - respectfully, they don't know the first thing about airport operations.

I don't mean to sound "paternalistic" but I think that some concepts in aviation can be beyond the comprehension of the average person. For example, CAIR thought it was a big deal that there is no one in the tower after 11PM but later acknowledged that this was standard procedure all over Canada at all but 13 airports. Had they asked me first, I could have told them that. So what is the net result, people are confused and scared because they don't know how the system operates so they make assumptions based on the description of events provided by CAIR.

I think this is wrong and that is why I participate in this blog - to prevent misinformation from forming the basis of peoples perceptions about the airport. My motives are sincere and YES, sometimes I get emotional out of pure frustration with the process - just as you are also frustrated by the dysfunctional TPA. If you have suggestions about HOW I can inform you or provide perspective about airport operations without crossing the "paternalistic" line - I am flexible.

With respect to my blog supporting Jets coinciding with the Star op-ed - that was intentional. I wanted to present my opinion while the issue was being discussed in public. I thought I provided valid reasons for supporting jet traffic. Your primary concern is the ability of the TPA to manage their responsibilities which is an entirely separate matter. My support for Jets "assumes" the TPA will manage the operation correctly.

Hope this helps.

Take Care!
Joe
