Joe: Airport operate without control towers all the time!
When you read this, PLEASE try to understand just how frustrated I am!
Earth to Community Air - anybody home?
I have been a regular participant on this blog since February and Mr Iler and Mr Freeman both know that I am an Air Traffic Controller and that I was a controller at the TCCA for almost 5 years.
Therefore, is there any logical reason WHY someone at CAIR couldn't contact me PRIOR to releasing a very ridiculous and alarmist and exaggerated press release about aircraft landing without controllers in the cab? I could have saved you the trouble and helped preserve SOME level of credibility for your organization.
I am NOT debating the issue of curfew violations - these are categorically wrong and need to be addressed.
I have told you repeatedly that I am here to help answer questions of an operational nature. This certainly qualifies. Again, I have to question the motives behind such a press release - let's scare everyone into submission and opposition of the airport. Clearly, that is all it can be.
FOR THE RECORD - aircraft safely land and depart at airports WITHOUT control towers all over the world every day.
Not every airport has a control tower. For example, Brampton airport which probably has more daily flights than the TCCA, is uncontrolled.
Obviously, at the TCCA, the controllers leave at 11PM but Medevac helicopters come and go on a regular basis after 11PM don't they?? Why no mention of that? Medevac aircraft also come and go after 11PM - why no mention of that?
I worked at Windsor control tower in 1993-1994, and Air Ontario Dash 8s and Canadian Regional 50 seat turboprops landed after I left on many occasions.
This is NORMAL, STANDARD, ACCEPTED, AND SAFE! Transport Canada publishes procedures for these operations. Did ANYONE (Mr. KOTYK) even bother to look them up?
This press release is UTTER NONSENSE and I will surely contact media outlets to remind them of the obvious motives behind such a misleading and fear mongering exercise!
Mr. Iler, I can't believe you signed your name to such a document without asking me about it first. Do you have any interest in preserving some level of credibility for CAIR? You've contacted me on several occasions in the past, why not on this obviously relevant example? This is an obvious attempt at coercing opposition to the airport based on blatant fear mongering from a group that is clearly not interested in providing any perspective!
Again, I don't have an issue with notifying the media of continued curfew violations. My issue is strictly to do with the ridiculous "NO ONE IN THE TOWER..." headline.
If anyone has any questions about HOW aircraft can operate without a control tower, please post them and I'll be happy to explain the process.
Joe.
