Cancellations and Porter's financial health

All this talk about canceled flights and what does it all mean?

A few folks have already zeroed in on Mr. Kotyk for his very shortsighted quote about cancellations relating to the health of an airline but some perspective would be nice.

How many cancellations do Porter average per day over a month of flights?
If they are canceling 9 flights EVERY DAY, there may be more layers to the story. One day with 9 cancellations is hardly newsworthy - even for CAIR.

I worked for Air Canada Operations and can tell you that cancellations are a routine part of the airline business and are sometimes necessary to avoid having several aircraft tied up at an airport being plagued by bad weather or to accommodate last minute & unplanned aircraft maintenance requirements.

Secondly, the load factor having gone down from 44% to 40% doesn't recognize that new aircraft and cities have been added to the operation - this would logically bring the percentages down in a NON-DRAMATIC type of way.
Again, this is nothing to write home about.

Also, while Porter may have canceled 9 flights, where is the opposite and balancing comment about the 3 cities they will have added since June?

Mr. Kotyk, you are obviously a very capable researcher and I have praised some of your work on this blog. This vague and meaningless banter about cancellations is below your standards.

On another note, there has been much ado about Mr. McQueen's response regarding engine maintenance runs.
I don't share the notion that Mr. McQueen's response was rude. It was a direct answer to a question that everyone asks but don't really care to hear the answer. The bottom line is that engine maintenance is a huge inconvenience for the local community and this exchange merely reinforces the idea that very strict guidelines are required to minimize the adverse effects of this necessary activity.

I think that prior to making accusations about Mr. Mcqueens remarks, people should ensure they have not used very similar language to describe Porter, airport management or government officials. There are dozens of examples of questionable insinuations and accusations leveled at people on this blog.

Take Care!
Joe
