Summary of flaws in the TPA survey
Here is a summary of the flaws of the Toronto Port Authority public survey. The following are statements that the survey asks opinions about, followed by comments about how information has been skewed:
"The tunnel would cost the Toronto Port Authority between $20 and $40 million to build." Why not say: The tunnel would cost tax-payers between $20 and $40 million?
"The tunnel would help with the construction of a much-needed water main to the Islands, providing residents there with improved water services." Oh really, so the islanders can finally get indoor plumbing? What are they talking about?
"The tunnel would improve access to the Toronto islands for all residents, not just airport users." This is vague. How does it improve access and how much access does it create? Why would an Island resident want to go to the foot of Bathurst Street and then cross the entire 5kms of island to get home, let alone get across the tarmac, dodge the planes and cross the security enforced gate on the other side?
"A ferry service for such a short distance is not an efficient way to access the airport." They are telling, not asking here.
"And, FROM YOUR HOME, do you hear any sound or noise associated with the airplanes that land at, and take off from, the Island Airport?" According to the survey, only 1% of respondents actually live on the waterfriont. So what is the point of asking this question of someone who lives in North York or Scarborough?
"As you may know, Toronto's waterfront has been going through a process of revitalization in recent years, with the development and creation of new communities, parks and green spaces along the watefront. Do you think these changes along Toronto's waterfront are headed in the right direction or wrong direction?" What has waterfront revitalization got to do with the Toronto Port Authority?
That only 5% of people could identify that Toronto Waterfront Rvtlztn Corp/Wtrfrnt Trnt has been involved in the revitalization of Toronto's waterfront and that 3% know that the Federal government appoints the members to the TPA board proves that this is not a well informed set of people regarding the waterfront. What is the point in asking them these questions.
The Toronto Port Authority did not build the Leslie Spit, it was the TPA's ancestor, Toronto Harbour Commission that started it in the 1950's. Could they not have dredged up something more current?
"[The TPA] Grants permits to recreational boaters in the harbour of Toronto" How about saying "charges boaters for using the harbour giving little in return ie the TPA doesn't even fulfill its responsibilities of maintaining the seawalls?"
"The Toronto Port Authority should help manage the sustainable growth of Toronto?" Could they have been more specific on exactly how and how much this will cost taxpayers?
"The Toronto Port Authority plays a vital role in the environmental well-being of Toronto?" How? The TPA is not self-sustaining, it has consistently lost money in the
