Joe wades in on the tunnel

Hello all tunnel haters,

Listen, I don't agree with any tunnel building so let's make that clear from the start.

On the other hand (devil's advocate only), would there be any benefit to the community by reducing the approximately 120 ferry trips per day in terms of ferry exhaust + fuel consumption, cars idling waiting to cross at both ends etc...

For a group pushing an environmental agenda, you might at least acknowledge that these are POSSIBLY some benefits of a tunnel??

The bigger issue is the connection of this tunnel and funding for it as a PORTER exclusive benefit. Well, until another airline moves in to the TCCA, you are correct.

I have heard through some pilots that there are discussions afoot to build more aircraft parking (apron) space to the south of the main east west runway.

This would accommodate the smaller general aviation aircraft freeing up more space on the side where the new terminal is. This may lead to allowing a new carrier or two to operate and therefore benefit from a tunnel, thus removing the exclusivity argument.

On another note, has Community Air been keeping up on the fate of Buttonville airport in Markham? They are in need of $1.5 million dollars a year from "somewhere" to keep them open for business.

The Greater Toronto Airports Authority (GTAA) has pulled their funding for the facility and left them perilously close to closing up. If that airport closes, the odds of convincing ANYONE that the TCCA should close will be slim and none - and slim will have left town.

If the GTA loses both Buttonville and the TCCA, there will be a significant void in the ability of this city to accommodate general aviation and many corporate users. Pearson can certainly handle SOME of the traffic but the smallest and slowest users would not be accommodated at an international airport. That's what the TCCA and Buttonville are for.

PS - Mr. Lipton - I understand about site specific plays and appreciate the historic importance of the park in question. However, didn't anyone associated with the production at least visit the site to make sure it was at least suitable. That's all I'm saying. This makes more sense than complaining about it AFTER the fact.

Take Care!
Joe
