Two postings by Iler on the pedestrian tunnel controversy

POSTING 1:

I was just on City-TV with Adam. Their poll was 80-20 against the tunnel. CTV did a similar poll with 60-40 n favour, but of course did not invite anyone to speak for the opposition. Adam thinks there’s no way they can get all their approvals in time for the deadline. I got to make the point that if the TPA poll had asked whether public dollars should be spent on the tunnel, the result would have been wholly opposed.

Bill Saundercook was on with us – he tried to maintain that the tunnel would benefit access to the island too – clearly out to lunch.

POSTING 2:

According to the Toronto Port Authority, the question asked was:

"As you may know, access to this airport is by a short ferry ride across a distance of 400 feet (or 121 metres) of water. Do you strongly support, somewhat support, somewhat oppose, or strongly oppose the construction of a pedestrian tunnel underneath this waterway to improve access to the Toronto City Centre Airport?"

If this question had included “Do you support the use of public infrastructure money for this purpose?”, the answer would, of course, have been very different.
