Toronto Port Authority Annual General Meeting

The Toronto Port Authority will be holding its Annual General Meeting on Thursday, September 3rd at 9:30 am, in the Upper Canada Room of the Royal York Hotel.

This annual event has been a donnybrook in the past with the TPA staff and board members trying to defend themselves against an engaged and enraged citizenry.

This time, no doubt, the TPA board will be bragging that they are finally turning a profit, although the debt still makes the whole edifice look pretty shaky.

The intelligence of the attending public can also expect to be insulted with a PR survey that declares that the TPA has widespread support from the Toronto public.   That should invite some cynical comments about the validity of surveys of this kind.

But perhaps the highlight of the meeting will come when the TPA Board tries to sell the public on investing somewhere between $20 and $40 million on a new pedestrian tunnel to the airport.  A tunnel, we might point out, that is designed to be yet another public subsidy that will primarily benefit Porter Airlines.

Talking of subsidies, we have heard strong rumors that Porter will be receiving a federal government subsidy to buy new Q400 aircraft from Bombardier.  The bailouts, perks and subsidies for politically strong companies never seem to end in this country.

So yet again, the TPA/AGM is an event not to be missed.  Try and come for the show.
