More on safety at the Island Airport

Hello Very Worried Mom,

Unfortunately, the sad truth is that accidents can happen anytime. Fortunately, midair collisions like the one in New York are extremely rare.

Furthermore, the likelihood of midair collisions is reduced by the existence of a control tower overseeing the entire downtown core. If the TCCA closes, as some of you would like, that control service will be gone but the helicopters and sightseers and overflights will remain.  You'll have a front seat to the daily airshow without the benefit of the control tower services.

Also, let me be the first to point out the "possible" curfew breach on Sunday night around 11PM. After several hours of severe weather and aircraft diverting all over the place, I observed a Porter flight on approach to land right at 11PM. I can't see the TCCA from Pearson tower so I can't say exactly when they landed. Why am I mentioning this - because at the same time this 1 Porter flight landed, about 8 Porter flights were enroute to or leaving Pearson airport. Pearson was very busy with flights right up to 1:15AM thanks to the severe weather.

I know you won't be thankful but at least recognise that, as a matter of perspective, an arrival at 11:01PM pales significantly in light of the dangerous weather that existed earlier and the 120+ flights that operated at Pearson AFTER 11PM -
(one days worth of Porter flights in about 2 hours).

Take Care!
Joe
