Reason for success of Porter
Hello Mr. Freeman,
Here's your quote for those who missed it:
"the success of Porter Airlines is not dependent on its location at the Island Airport. The appropriate location for the company is Pearson International Airport."
I have to disagree since the business model being used by Porter ONLY works because of the TCCA.
If Porter moves to Pearson, they lose their location advantage with shorter travel time from downtown & shorter lineups once at the airport.
They also would be in direct competition with JET flying airlines to the destinations they serve. Many people who still bother to go to Pearson (that have a viable Porter option) most likely do so because of their preferance of Jets over Props.
There are other factors such as loyalty program points or corporate booking preferances etc.
If Porter moves to Pearson , their model will not "fly" - pardon the pun.
They are encountering success because they are serving a niche market out of a conveniently located airport with no competition, and also providing top notch service to their customers which ultimately ensures repeat business.
Porter's service level, on it's own, would not be enough to allow them to survive at Pearson. I agree that the costs at Pearson are insane but even if the fees were equal, I don't think Deluce ever dreamed of operating out of Pearson - so that point becomes moot.
Porter has definite advantages at the TCCA that cannot be reproduced at Pearson. This may be unfair in the eyes of many, but remember that Air Canada Jazz had just as much opportunity and slots to fly out of the TCCA and CHOSE to cut service repeatedly until only 6 flights per day existed. As I've said many times, I don't condone the current monopoly state of affairs at the TCCA but it is obviously a large component of Porter's success.
Take Care!
