Safety in Little Norway Park

Hi Very Worried Mom,

I'm a father of 2 children so I can relate to the desire to protect our children from the many dangers they will encounter in life.

I can also tell you that the children using Little Norway Park or the nearby school unfortunately have a far greater chance of being hit by a car than being affected by the crash of any aircraft using the TCCA. Little Norway Park and the nearby school are nowhere near the approach or departure paths used by Porter or any other commercial operator.
Furthermore, when the weather is foggy, Porter and others will be confined to very specific flight paths that are checked twice a year for accuracy by NavCanada flight check aircraft. These flight paths are predominantly over water and nowhere near the sites you expressed concern about.

Understand that the TCCA has the luxury of the majority of flight paths being over the water. Do you remember when the USAIR Jet crashed in New York a few months ago after the engines ingested a flock of Canada Geese? That pilot, with precious few moments to decide where to "crash land", CHOSE the Hudson River.

Any airline flight with a problem on their way to the TCCA, would have several options to crash land the aircraft and a park or schoolyard is not on the list of locations that pilots consider.

If the park or school were directly underneath the approach or departure paths, then I would agree with you that those locations might be at some risk (albeit minimal).

The TCCA has been in operation for several decades and I am not aware of an aircraft that was either arriving or departing the TCCA crashing anywhere BUT the water. (perhaps Mr. Kotyk has more information on this)
I guess we can never say "NEVER" but certainly history has shown us that this airport, despite the many incorrect assertions of it's dangerous location, is NOT dangerous.
Furthermore, if there was a real danger at the TCCA, the pilots who fly into and out of the facility EVERY DAY would be at the front of the line DEMANDING changes to whatever needed to be rectified.

There, one less thing for the worried mom to worry about.

Take Care!
Joe
