High Speed Rail

Here's another one for the rail fans.

Calgary Herald is reporting on a study to implement high speed rail between Edmonton and Calgary at a cost of between 3 Billion to 20 Billion $$$$ (depending on which train is selected).

They go on to say that this would be difficult to introduce to Ontario due to the sprawl that has already taken up so much land.

Imagine the cost to setup a line from Windsor to Quebec City - at least 3-4 times the Alberta price (based on mileage), not including payouts to residents and businesses expropriated by the construction of this useful but costly infrastructure.

Don't get me wrong - I like trains, I just don't know if the initial price tag will ever be recouped over the life of the project. Keep in mind that High Speed lines in Europe need to be replaced every 5 years due to fatigue.

Those track sections tend to be recycled and used on non-High Speed sectors, but these costs must also be considered.
The method of electrical generation must also be factored in to the Ontario example as we are set to add Nuclear capacity which has it's own built in problems of spent fuel disposal.

Take Care!
Joe
