Comment on "Pops, bangs and whizzers"
Hello TD Rose,
Many people on this blog raise concerns that the TCCA is a dangerous airport. One of those perceived dangerous aspects is with respect to bird strikes.
In addition, the TPA is constantly accused of not doing enough to improve safety at the facility.
Now, this "bird protection gizmo" comes along and the complaints continue.
You can't on one hand complain about safety and on the other complain about measures to improve safety.
Noise from scaring wildlife is unfortunately a common event at the TCCA (and all other airports) that is done to prevent accidents which make a much louder noise.
Let me address your dismay.
If the government didn't care about the impact of the TCCA on "real live people", there wouldn't be any slot limits at all - so I agree with you - be happy the slot limit exists (and it is closer to 120 NOT 160 BTW).
Also be happy that there is a curfew - try sleeping near Pearson with flights in and out throughout the night with MUCH larger and louder aircraft.
You can also be happy for the hundreds of skilled jobs created by Porter and other jobs maintaining and operating the airport.
Thanks to the popularity of the TCCA, celebrate the significant reduction in automobile traffic for the 40 minute drive (and much longer at rush hour) from downtown to Pearson.
I could go on but am constrained by the 3000 character limit.
See, there are many things to be thankful for. As listed above, there are many aspects of this airport that are far better than those of other airports.
I should know, I've lived near Pearson for 13 years. It's not great but it hasn't been enough for me to move away or start a website against the facility.
I'm not trying to disrespect your concerns - I'm only TRYING to point out that although, in your opinion, things aren't good, they could be MUCH MUCH worse. I don't think you can argue with that.
Good Luck and be positive.
Take Care!
Joe
