Joe responds to the Red Bull controversy

Hi Mr. Freeman,

Before I respond, I just want to clarify that I was not trying to defend the stunt (your title was "Joe Defends Red Bull stunts") but was trying to explain that the average person might see something happen around the airport and jump to incorrect conclusions about standards, safety and legalities etc..

I stated that this flight SHOULD NOT have taken place over noise sensitive areas (NSA) as there are many other areas that would have been suitable for such an event. I don't remember where Algonquin Island is so it may not be covered by the operating restrictions over the NSA's.

Regardless, My issue with Mr. Lipton's tirade was that he is MOST LIKELY not qualified to determine if any Air Traffic Control separation standards were infringed upon or if any specific Air regulations were contravened by these flights. Therefore, to characterise the event as illegal and to blame controllers for not upholding certain standards when you have NO IDEA what those standards actually are is ridiculous!

Mr. Lipton, I think you should at least prove which part of the flight was illegal OR apologise.

I don't dispute that this flight was likely disruptive and noisy and caused a visual distraction but that does not mean it was illegal. At some point we have to acknowledge that living NEAR an airport means that you may see some things you don't comprehend or agree with. By all means ask questions of the Tower Manager or the TPA if you require clarification BUT DON"T LAUNCH AN ALL OUT ASSAULT UNTIL YOU HAVE YOUR FACTS (IF ANY) STRAIGHT!

Furthermore, I strongly agree that the TPA needs to take the sensitivity of airport area residents into account when approving such events and restrict them to less intrusive areas as much as possible.

Don't just assume that because I worked at the TCCA tower that I'm automatically going to disagree with comments against Controllers. I know that my colleagues understand and respect the NSA's by avoiding them as much as possible. However, if someone has made a mistake, then that individual should be counselled to correct future transgressions.

Take Care!
Joe
