Joe's position on closing the Island Airport

RE: Why can't the airport close?

Well Anonymous - If that is your real name

1) I believe a Q400 is a Dash 8. Dash 8s are allowed to operate at the TCCA.
Apparently Transport Canada agrees with me since the Q400 is listed as a variant of the Dash 8 in aviation publications as a DH8D or Dash 8-400.
The other Dash 8's being:
DH8A - Dash 8-100,
DH8B - Dash 8-200,
DH8C - Dash 8-300,

2) If Porter hasn't paid any penalties or has a monopoly, these are TPA problems. I've ALREADY said that I DON'T agree with the TPA's handling of either issue.

3) I have NEVER argued that the airport CAN'T be CLOSED. I've only said that, I don't agree with closing it.

4) Many bloggers have used the analogy of "Plopping" an airport in the Middle of something like Sydney Harbour or Central Park NY etc... The TCCA has been there for a very long time and waterfront development has occurred while the airport has been in operation.
In the City Express days when Condos were beginning to appear on the landscape, the TCCA was the 3rd busiest airport in Canada. Therefore, although the land is zoned for parkland, I believe the airport either has an exemption or is considered a permitted use (check with Mr. Iler on this one since I'm not the City Planner) This makes the entire Zoning argument moot.
If Sydney had an airport on their harbor and someone decided to build the opera house after the fact, and then went on to complain about airport noise in the vicinity of the opera house, I would question the logic of building such a facility in the vicinity of an airport. This is a more realistic argument than magically creating an airport in the middle of a fully developed area.

5) Seeking improvements with the TPA are a 2 way street. Many (not all) airport opponents treat the TPA like a pariah and refuse to have any open and useful dialogue with them. Garbage in - Garbage out is the result. You can complain all you want about the TPA, and I've agreed with most issues raised about them. However, It is a cop out to make blanket claims about lack of dialogue while referring to them as a nemesis.

6) The people of Toronto chose a mayor opposed to airport expansion who fell well short of a majority of votes in this regard. (40% popular vote rings a bell combined with about 60% voter turnout doesn't equate to a ringing endorsement.) Miller had the most votes but NOT a majority. You may suggest an airport referendum but be prepared that IF the numbers don't go your way, you won't have the assumption of "everyone is opposed to the airport" to lean on.

7) I'm not sure if I should be apologizing for my career choice or my salary - If that is your point.
Yes, I benefit financially from Pearson Airport so does this mean that all of my OPINIONS are deemed inadmissible?
Is it hard to see the bias from commentary of those who live on an Island which is zoned as parkland?
I still respect their opinions, I hope you can respect mine.
