Airport foes down mayor
Thanks for Porter’s good news Flying Around The Globe (NOW
Daily Online, April 29), but there’s a lot more to it.
We’ve been working with the mayor’s office for a long time in
an effort to move him and the city to take real steps to enforce the rights set
out in the tripartite agreement for the protection of our waterfront. Our last
meeting was July 10. In that meeting, he promised that if we provided him with
evidence of breaches, he would act.
The brief we provided sets out carefully the evidence of
Porter Airlines’ breaches in our possession.
We’ve not gone public till now because we respect Mayor
Miller and have been encouraged by his views on the Island Airport. He has let
us down.
The Toronto Port Authority’s noise consultants finally
admitted the Q400 breaches of the noise limits (we’ve been asking for an answer
for many months) but came up with an argument that rules allow the breaches to
be averaged.
The waterfront communities have been more or less silent.
That is changing quickly, as the reality of incessant noise and pollution grows,
as Porter’s smugness grates on more and more people, and as the waterfront
becomes increasingly unusable for recreation and cultural
activities.
