An Interesting Week...
It’s been an interesting week. Our
demonstration last Monday wildly exceeded our expectations – twenty turning out
would have been fine. To get closer to a hundred was huge.
This was the first time we’ve gone
public with our frustration with Mayor Miller – it’s been brewing for a long
time, as we meet and talk, and write letters – but with no action, it was
time.
While Enzo di Matteo of NOW
Magazine initially called it incomprehensible, we’ve had some discussions with
him, and he now understands. Watch for a letter to the Editor this week. Carol
Goar, unprompted, raised David’s lack of action on the airport as a serious
concern in The Star. We’ve had other good discussions with the media this
week, as well.
We’ve recognized that nothing is
known – by the media, by politicians, or the public, about the effect airport
expansion is having on waterfront residents, and the waterfront’s til-now
deserved reputation as Toronto’s best place to visit. We know that the absence
of that awareness gives the Mayor very little room to move – that’s why the
demonstration last week was so important. And it sparked the now-renewed efforts
by waterfront residents to make their concerns known, starting with their press
conference this week to talk personal experiences.
