Skywatcher responds to J. Spragge
Smokers love to smoke and they benefit society by dying sooner. Smokers see smoking as their right and if it kills them then so what -- you don't like my smoke, go somewhere else ... now bugger off . (Skywatcher is an ex smoker) People who love to fly see flying as their right to go anywhere they want -- they can afford it and so what - the fumes, noise and greenhouse gases don't bother them-- so bugger off.
Where is the difference again?
You said aviation benefits society. Well so, does thoughtful behaviour. Choosing not to smoke because it can endanger the health of non-smokers is thoughtful behaviour. Choosing not to fly by taking a bus or train (both modes of travel which emit far less pollution) benefits society. Choosing GO transit in order to get into Toronto rather than driving on the Gardner every day benefits society. Twitter, Facebook, Skype and social media networks connect far more people much faster and better than aviation. Our vibrant multi-cultural waterfront suffers now and will be crushed from an expanded airport. Skywatcher can no longer listen to culture in The Music Garden -- Yo Yo Ma's beautifully inspired oasis now marred by the sounds and odours of aircraft; it will only get worse because, like you said, "Aviation carries people who make business and government work" so we must have more planes to get these busy people who, if we may say, helped create our current economy to their busy jobs.
Skywatcher quotes Spock on Star Trek:
"logic clearly dictates that the needs of the many who live and recreate at the Waterfront outweigh the needs of those that don't live and breath down here ".
.. No, no wait..that's not right. Spock didn't say that....
Skywatcher did.
