Badly burned by "balanced"
On balance, the Bathurst Quay community was badly burned by trying hard during the late 80s to be "balanced". We decided not to call for closing the island airport then, believing that a small sleepy airport, with general aviation, a small flight school, and maybe even very limited commercial aviation could co-exist with the rapidly increasing population in the area. We wanted to be "reasonable", even though trial balloons were raised about relocating the airport, at the time of the Crombie Commission hearings.
Boy, were we wrong!
This rapidly expanding island airport is a nightmare! Our buildings were not designed to enable us to co-exist with this! We have to keep our windows and balcony doors open for cooling in the summer, and the windows and doors don't keep out the noise, even in the winter.
If we were in England, as I read, airport expansion would require the airport authority to remediate our buildings to deal with the effects, but we're in the Wild West here with the TPA. It doesn't feel very balanced.
