Can Porter only use one runway?

Hi Joe,

I was under the impression that Porter's planes could use only one runway (the east-west) at the Island Airport because the north-south runway is too short for their Q400s.

Does the direction of approach cause the runway to be numbered differently? My aeronautical education has far to go.

Not sure who your invitation to tour Pearson's tower was meant for but I've had lots of interesting times in Gander, NL, where I worked on two aviation-centred movies -- in the 1942 period and the other was set in the 9-11 period.

We recreated the 1942 tower (and a Hudson bomber cockpit) on an unused apron at Gander for one film (Above and Beyond) and the present-day tower for the 9-11 movie -- (Diverted) which aired on CBC two weeks ago.

Of course we had to tour and inspect Gander's tower in great detail in order to build a double in the studio (which was really a high school gym in St. John's). One would never imagine what all in housed in a control tower. I learned a lot.

Thanks for your informative entries.   Ane Christensen
