Dear Joe
I like the way you are trying to inject a reasonable tone to this discussion.
The question of the curfew is mandated in the Tripartite Agreement which is the lease between the City and the Port Authority. It was put in place to protect the community from unacceptable noise.
The Lessee acknowledges and agrees that all flights into and out of the Toronto City Centre Airport shall operate between the hours of 6:45 a.m. and 11:00 p.m.,with the exception of medical evacuations and other emergency uses.
It is not a negotiable time Joe.
Deluce has already tried to buy the support of the School and Community Centre by donating money to programs there.
The School/Community Centre is 706 m from the centre line of the main runway. When the wind is from the south it is bathed in the jet fuel fumes from the Q-400s. The kids there and in the children's playground only 540 m from the runway are exposed to large and getting larger amounts of these carcinogens; 1,3-butadiene, formaldehyde, nitrogen oxides, acetaldehyde and others.
Allowing engine run-ups is is totally unacceptable ! They are so loud that an acquaintance of mine said he heard one at his house last summer. His house is located near Dundas and Spadina.
Deluce should sponsor cultural events on the waterfront; Joe you do not know of what a destructive force that Porter has on existing cultural events on the waterfront.
The noise from last summers flights with six planes was disruptive to concerts at the Music Garden as well as the larger amplified concerts at Harbourfront Centre. I was at a concert last summer at Harbourfront when the musicians stopped as a plane landed. As well the stench of kerosene jet fuel was overwhelming at the concert.
There is no benefit from an airport at all to the people that live in the neighbourhood or to those people that come to enjoy the waterfront.
The stink and noise from 18 planes this summer will push a lot more people in demanding the closing of this industrial wasteland on the waterfront.
