Greenspace on the Islands
I am starting to think that, valid as they are, the noise complaints or rather, the emphasis on the noise complaints, is doing us Community Air supporters, a disservice.
I happen to live at Bloor and Islington - Lord knows I don't hear the Porter planes. When I first became a Community Air supporter, I lived in High Park. I was against the bridge to the Airport because it opened the doors to more air traffic from the islands. I, as a Torontonian, an Ontarian and a Canadian, just want us to make the most of our incredible waterfront, for all residents of, and visitors to, Toronto - and in the best environmental interests of the Planet as a whole.
A drain on the public purse for the convenience of a few downtown flyers just doesn't objectively seem to be the way to achieve that. And as with many other Green/Environmentally responsible/Forward looking files and decisions, once the wrong fork in the road is taken, there is no turning back. Greenspace at the islands, all the islands, is far better for the majority of us human beings of all stripes.
Downsview is now a recreational area, and maybe Pearson will be some day too, when we've graduated to interspace travel
But for the time being, the island airport has no rationally justifiably reason for being. It is only a convenience for a few, to the detriment of very many.
