Comment on Airport Noise Complaints

This curfew business is old news. Back in the 80's when City Express operated out of the island airport (achieving almost a million passengers a year travel volume), flights took off and landed at all hours without regard to regulation, and routine aircraft maintenance (with high stress engine testing) was regularly carried out well into the night. I recall the airport operators being overwhelmed with noise complaints, and the issue was even raised at city council. But nothing was done. Officials not only ignored the mounting complaints, but openly dismissed them as the mischievous rantings of a small minority of trouble makers, mostly islanders with nothing better to do with their idle time on the island where they shouldn’t be living anyway. Even the Toronto Board of Trade got into the act complaining that the island airport needed to be expanded to serve the better interests of the business community at large, and not be hounded by a bunch of ne’er-do-wells. Some things never change.

In my opinion, this issue is dead on arrival unless it has traction at the federal level, starting with the Minister of Transport. The TPA will continue to pooh hoo the public complaining until reined in by higher authority.
