The long list of very generous sponsors and donors ranged from the Corporate VIA Rail to the arts community, to the food industry, to the clothing world, to various artisans and, of course, to the writers and entertainers who were there. And the list does goes on. Live Auctioneers Bill Kime and Jack Layton encouraged a packed house to part with their cash for the treasures on offer. Those present also bid on the Silent Auction Items, while enjoying food from The River Restaurant, the Afghan Women’s Catering Group, All the Best Fine Foods and Lemon & Allspice.
Kathleen McDonnell, Cindy Jones and Duncan Smith opened the evening with a collection of their most appropriate train songs and, in particular “Shut that Airport Down as heard on youtube, and our own website. After the Live auction musicians Soozie Schlanger, Suzie Vinnick, David Woodhead, David Matheson and Rich Greenspoon kept the crowd dancing with their wonderful mix of music.
The influx of money will allow CommunityAIR to move forward with our mandate. We will continue to monitor and hold the Toronto Port Authority accountable and we will work towards devolving the control of the TPA to the City of Toronto. We will bring attention to the impact that Short Haul flights have on our environment. We will continue to envision better uses for the Toronto Island lands that are presently being used for an airport. The project will be a long one, but ultimately we will succeed in closing the Island Airport and returning it to the city of Toronto.
