Deluce still Dreams of the Bridge to the Island Airport
In the Globe and Mail, Report on Business, March 19th, Brent Jang, the Transportation Reporter, quoted Robert Deluce, the President of Porter Airlines Inc. as saying that their bookings to Newark N.J. were "steady." He also announced that Porter will be flying to Quebec City. But the interesting part of the article was his comments about Mayor David Miller. This is a direct quote from the article.
Mr. Deluce said Porter's route expansion plans are going well, despite opposition from "unruly" Toronto Mayor David Miller, who has fought proposals to build a bridge connecting downtown Toronto to Porter's island terminal.
Mr. Deluce believes the ferry service connecting the downtown core to the island will keep up with increased consumer demand, but he holds out hope for a new bridge or tunnel in the long term, when Mr. Miller is no longer in office.
"Mayors aren't necessarily lifetime mayors, and who knows what happens afterwards," Mr. Deluce said.
So the truth is out. This is Robert Deluce's long term plan. He hopes that he can get rid of the "unruly" Mayor David Miller and build a bridge or tunnel to the island airport. What he has forgotten is that in 2003 at least 60% of Torontonians, according to polls in both the Toronto Star and the Sun, were opposed to Island Airport expansion and the building of the bridge. There is no suggestion that opinions have changed since that time.
Perhaps what Deluce is doing is setting up a scapegoat. Porter flights are still less than half full, despite a very expensive advertising campaign. So now he is saying it is all David Miller's fault. Once Miller is gone the bridge will be built and everything will be wonderful for Porter Airlines.
Don't believe it.

We are continuing our Friday demos every week from 5:30 to 7:30. We occasionally take a week off (last Good Friday) but we have over 70 demonstrations behind us.
Jerry & Leida are away for the next 6 weeks so we need some more folks to come out and help us keep the beat. You don't have to drum but it is fun. We entertain ourselves as we hold the vigil and show our resistance to the presence of the airport. With a few more participants we could more effectively distribute our fliers.
Almost every week someone new turns out in response to the ad in Now. Sometimes it is a student in a journalism course, sometimes it is an activist that is curious. We need to keep spreading the word and sometimes we get to say hello to Robert Deluce.
So come on out in this improving weather and play with us.
