Consensus – Candidates Endorse City control of Port
CommunityAIR today released the results of its questionnaire of candidates in the Toronto City Centre by-election. All candidates responding endorsed CommunityAIR’s position that the Toronto Port Authority should be locally controlled.
“We’re pleased that all responding candidates recognized that there’s a desperate need for the TPA to be more accountable for its actions to the people of Toronto. That can only happen if most of its directors are appointed by the City – as was the case with the Toronto Harbour Commission, the TPA’s predecessor.” , said Brian Iler, Chair of CommunityAIR.
The TPA board has refused to enforce the community rights contained in the tripartite agreement – rights that were negotiated to protect local neighbourhoods, and Harbourfront, from excessive aircraft noise, and expanded commercial use of the airport.
The TPA board is dominated by individuals with strong links to the Conservative party. The Conservative candidate in Toronto City Centre did not respond to the questionnaire.
